Types of Girls: Art Mediums

Using different mediums can feel like dealing with people who have vastly different personalities. What would they be like if they were human? We’ve all seen those “Types of Girls” posts on Tumblr and Pinterest, so I thought it would be fun to do one for art mediums!

A small caveat: I am only doing art mediums I’m familiar with so that I don’t incorrectly typecast them based on my lack of experience. I see you, 3-D artists, textiles artists, animators, and all you other lovely creators - I just can’t do justice to your process! Feel free to add your own to this collection, I’d love to see it in the comments.

So without further ado, I present Types of Girls: Art Mediums!

Watercolor: Free spirit. Does not like to be told what to do, incredibly moody and temperamental. Rejects rules not because she’s a bad person, but because she finds them stifling. Unreliable and flaky, but when she does come through she absolutely shines. She is magical and otherworldly.

Acrylics: Practical without being boring. She is modern and forward-thinking. Embraces minimalism. Doesn’t like pomp and circumstance, but is not afraid of attention. Constantly moving from one idea to the next, so it’s easy to get left behind. Fits in with any group - can be rough around the edges or super soft depending on the day, and is not afraid to express her emotions.

Digital Art: Incredibly versatile and adaptable. Is not thrown off by a change of plans. She is very precise, and loves getting down to the numbers and “why” of a situation. Lots of hidden skills - she is constantly surprising you. Can appear a bit uniform and mediocre, but it totally depends on how much you nurture a friendship with her. She will match exactly what you put in.

Colored Pencils: Lives intentionally, and believes that every little thing matters. Has “Life’s About the Journey, not the Destination” on a throw pillow. Detail-oriented. Never does anything quickly, has no idea what “procrastination” is. A bit of an attention seeker, needs friends with patient souls. Does not perform well under pressure, but is in it for the long haul.

Graphite/Pencil: Your friend since elementary school who has always been there. Reliable and unpretentious. A great listener who never judges. She will be a sounding board for all your ideas - although she isn’t afraid to be blunt if one of them really stinks. Goes with the flow, low-maintenance. She’s not flashy or bold. Probably got all B’s and C’s in high school, but is unmatched in her constancy.

Oils: Self-identified old soul. Wears vintage thrifted clothes and still somehow looks like royalty. Expressive and unique. Can be a bit pedantic and haughty, but it’s never on purpose. Pays five dollars for a fancy bottled water because tap makes her queasy. Really good at giving you your own time and space if you need it. Can be demanding to be long-term friends with her because of her somewhat extravagant spending habits and bougie lifestyle. Slow to trust, but once earned she will do anything for you.

Bonus - Charcoal & Chalk: Bold and dynamic. Leaves a damn mess everywhere she goes. Enigmatic, the “bad girl” you wanted to be friends with when graphite felt too boring. “Indecisive” was never in her vocabulary. Can be moody, and is never afraid to express her feelings. Does everything with purpose and resolve, and is eager to leave her mark.
